The Outreach team and the harm reduction approach

IMG section

The Open Door’s outreach team adopted the Harm Reduction Approach: Canadian Drugs and Substances strategy. As a low-barrier shelter, our organization evolved our reach by increasing our services within our Outreach radius. In addition to legal and medical accompaniments, providing essential services and items and building relations with the Milton-Park community; we can now provide the material and education related to drug use. The objective of the harm reduction approach is to diminish risks of STDs transmissions by assuring access to safe and sanitary drug use equipment, preventing overdoses through testing and first aid tools, as well as limiting social isolation often caused by the stigmatization of injection and inhalation habits. Harm reduction includes a large-scale prevention method and references to medical and social services along with supervised injection sites and services. It is primordial to grow with the community in a sense of openness and safety.
